What is a Coil Spring Insulator?

A coil spring insulator is a small piece of rubber mounted at the top and bottom of the coil spring and the body of your vehicle. Coil springs help insulate shock from your vehicle's body to protect it from the effects of harsh terrain and rough roads. These springs absorb vibrations and jostling from the tires to prevent the movement from transferring to the vehicle's body or steering system, which limits the risk of suspension components from being damaged by road shock and keeps your vehicle driving comfortably. The coil springs also allow the suspension to control the amount of movement in the front and rear end of the vehicle, and coil spring insulators help limit the amount of noise due to friction that is generated by the coil springs during operation. If you notice your vehicle bottoming out in turns or noises like creaking or cracking when steering or going over speed bumps or potholes, it could indicate that your coil spring insulators, shock absorbers, or other parts of your coil spring suspension system need to be inspected and replaced. As the rubber insulator wears down, you may also notice grinding noises or tire and brake wear, among other suspension issues.
