Coil and Leaf Spring Repair Parts
The suspension on your vehicle is designed to work with either coil or leaf springs, and in some cases, a combination of the two. Springs are designed to store and release energy, as well as to absorb shock, as a vehicle drives over bumps or rough terrain. Over time, springs, bushings, insulators, and other parts can become weak or fail due to wear and tear or sudden severe impact. Shop O'Reilly Auto Parts to find the parts you need for a complete coil or leaf spring repair.
Coil Springs
Coil springs are common on many vehicles, especially vehicles equipped with struts as part of the suspension system. Coil springs are combined with struts on the front suspension of most vehicles, or they may be used independently from your shocks or struts depending on how the suspension is designed. Independent rear suspension systems will likely have shocks and coil springs combined as a unit, while vehicles with solid rear axles may use a combination of shocks, coil springs, or leaf springs. Coilovers are also a popular suspension upgrade that use coil springs installed over shocks to improve the handling and performance of your vehicle. No matter the design of your vehicle's suspension system, O'Reilly Auto Parts has the suspension and spring replacement parts you need to make your repair.
Leaf Springs
Leaf springs are most commonly-used on the rear suspension of older pickups and SUVs, as well as on some commercial vehicles. Leaf springs are thin, arc-shaped springs made up of multiple layers, or leafs, bolted together to absorb shocks while driving. They also help keep the back of the vehicle level while hauling a heavy load, which is why they are seen most frequently on heavier vehicles which may be used for towing. Each leaf on the spring increases the total weight rating of the spring, so higher-rated springs will have more layers to handle heavier loads. In some cases, leaf spring helpers can be added to stock leaf springs to help keep the rear suspension more level and stable while towing. Leaf springs use bushings and shackles to mount to the frame of a vehicle and this design allows the leaf springs to expand and contract as needed while driving. Leaf springs, bushings, shackles, and other parts can wear out over time or due to severe use. Worn or broken shackles or bushings can cause clunking noises or vibrations while driving or hauling, and should be replaced as soon as possible to return your suspension to proper, safe operation.
