What Does a Sway Bar Do?

The sway or stabilizer bar, sometimes also called an anti-roll bar, is a suspension component that links the two sides of a vehicle's suspension to stabilize and balance the vehicle while driving, and to minimize body roll while cornering. Some vehicles may have a front sway bar, both a front and rear sway bar, or adjustable sway bars, allowing drivers to fine-tune the suspension for different driving conditions or preferences. Other components of a sway bar assembly include sway bar bushings and links which attach the sway bar to connect the sway bar to the control arm and the frame. If you notice that your vehicle is pulling to one side when on the road, or the body rolls excessively when cornering, you may need a replacement sway bar or new sway bar links and bushings. An issue with these components may also cause too much lateral flexibility in the sway bar, which can cause the stabilizer bar to become loose or suffer additional damage. Some sway bar assemblies may provide new mounting brackets for installation, so be sure to compare your disassembled parts with the replacement components before beginning your repair. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries sway bars and sway bar assembly kits for a complete, lasting sway bar repair. You can also learn more about how to replace sway bar links with our helpful How-To resources.
