What are Suspension Air Springs?

Suspension air springs, also known as air bags or air bellows, are an air ride suspension component that takes the place of shocks and struts to dampen vehicle vibration and movement in the suspension. The air springs are designed to support a vehicle's weight, improve ride quality, and maintain proper ride height. Air suspension systems are commonly found in modern vehicles like luxury passenger cars, trucks, buses, and other heavy-duty vehicles. Sometimes referred to as air struts or air shocks, the air spring consists of an adjustable air bladder that absorbs shock and is fed by the air suspension compressor to adjust to ride conditions or driving modes. Over time, environmental elements and constant inflation and deflation can cause stress on the seals and rubber air bladders, resulting in a leaking or underperforming suspension. If the air suspension system is failing, it may cause the vehicle to sag, ride lower than usual, and "bottom out" on bumps, which can cause components under the vehicle to make contact with the ground and suffer damage. If the air compressor is constantly running, it might be trying to compensate for a leak in the air suspension system. Replacing a bad suspension air spring can not only help prevent damage to undercarriage components, but can also help restore proper ride control, stability, and comfort.
