What is a Leaf Spring Bushing?

Chassis springs or leaf springs are stacked, bowed metal plates responsible for supporting your vehicle's axle and connecting the vehicle's suspension system to its chassis. Also known as the leaf spring eye mounts, leaf spring bushings are a reinforced rubber cylinder that are mounted at the end of the leaf springs. These bushings secure the leaf spring shackle which connects to the frame, and help to securely connect the chassis and the axle assembly. Leaf spring bushings are typically made of rubber, and can wear out or break down over time. When a leaf spring bushing experiences wear, it can allow the spring to move excessively and cause the axle to wander. From under the vehicle, it may appear as if the axle were off center. You may also hear clunks or groans when going over bumps or turning. If any debris gets between the leaf spring plates, grinding noises may also occur. If your bushings appear to be in good shape, inspect your leaf spring plates for any debris, damage, or wear. If you need replacement leaf spring bushings, shackles, or complete leaf springs, check out the selection of replacement suspension components at O'Reilly Auto Parts to help you make a complete repair.
