What is a Lateral Link and Ball Joint Assembly?

Your vehicle's lateral link, also called the lateral arm, keeps your vehicle secure and stable by connecting the axle housing to the frame of the vehicle. These links keep the axle from shifting side to side under the vehicle during operation, maintaining traction and ensuring that the axle assembly stays centered when cornering. Lateral links can be part of the front or rear suspension and are connected to the frame and axle assembly using either a stationary bushing or ball joint-style link. Over time, bushings or ball joints in the lateral link can wear out or be damaged by rust or a lack of grease. This can cause looseness in the joint and allow for excessive play in the axle assembly. If you hear knocking noises or increased vibration beneath your vehicle, or if you notice that it isn't handling as well as it used to, check your lateral link bushings and ball joints for signs of damage, wear, or excessive play. If the ball joints or boots are damaged, you may also notice grease leaking beneath the vehicle, and this is often a sign that the lateral link and ball joint assembly need to be replaced. At O'Reilly Auto Parts, we carry lateral link and ball joint assemblies for your complete suspension and steering system repair.
