What is an Idler Arm Bracket?

Idler arms are an essential part of your vehicle's suspension system and act as a pivoting support for the passenger side of the steering linkage. The idler arm swivels as the Pitman arm engages the steering system to allow movement and to prevent drag on the opposite side of the vehicle. The idler arm is composed of a rod that pivots on a bracket bolted to the vehicle's frame. One end of the idler arm is connected to the steering linkage, while the other end is connected to the idler arm bracket and frame. Idler arms also often include grease fittings to allow them to be lubricated and extend their service life. If an idler arm or bracket fails, you may experience your vehicle pulling to one side, or notice the vehicle seems to wander and weave on the road, affecting the steering and handling. You may also notice looseness in the steering wheel or experience extra play or movement before the tires respond to steering input. If the idler arm fails completely, you will likely lose complete steering control, which can quickly lead to an accident. If you have noticed any of these symptoms, check your idler arm, tie rods, and other suspension and steering components for signs of wear or damage. If you need a new idler arm, idler arm bracket, or other steering parts, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts for all the steering and suspension parts you need to restore your vehicle's handling.
