What are brake pad wear sensors?

The brake pad wear sensors are designed to notify you when it's time to service the brake pads. Over time, the friction of braking will wear the brake pads down to the point of activating the brake pad wear sensor, which usually displays a brake pad or brake system warning light indicating that the brakes need to be serviced. Some brake pad wear sensors are integrated into the brake pads, while others are independent sensors mounted to the pads. If the brake pad wear sensors are not included with the new brake pads, they should always be replaced when you change your brake pads and rotors to ensure that the wear sensors continue to work their best. If you have a brake system warning light but your brake pads are still in good shape, or if your brakes are severely worn and you were not notified, then the brake pad wear sensor could be malfunctioning and need to be replaced. Checking not only the condition of the brakes, but also the condition of the brake pad wear sensor, its mounting hardware, and the electrical connector can help determine the source of the problem to ensure you make the right repair. When you need to service or repair your brakes, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts' selection of brake pads, brake rotors, and brake pad wear sensors for a complete brake repair.
