What is a Banjo Bolt and Washer?

The brake hose is responsible for carrying pressurized brake fluid to the brake caliper or wheel cylinders. This pressure compresses the caliper pistons or expands the wheel cylinder pistons, which engage the brake pads or shoes to stop the vehicle when the brake pedal is pressed down. The brake hose is attached to the brake caliper with a banjo bolt and is typically sealed using a copper washer. These components securely attach the hose to the caliper and provide an air-tight seal between the two brake system components. Banjo bolts also include holes in the side and end of the bolt thread that allows brake fluid to flow from the hose to the caliper If you notice brake fluid leaks, but your brake hoses aren't damaged, split, or cracked, inspect the brake hose bolt or washer that seals the end of the brake hose to the brake caliper. If the bolt or washer is damaged, if you notice fluid build up around the bolt or washer, or if you experience a soft brake pedal or a pedal that sinks to the floor, inspect the condition of your caliper sealing bolts and washers and replace them as needed. It's also typically recommended that the brake banjo bolt and washers be replaced any time the caliper or brake hose is serviced to ensure a leak-free repair.
