Your vehicle's parking brake or emergency brake is an important safety and braking component, and is activated manually by using your parking brake lever or foot pedal. The parking brake is usually connected to the lever or foot pedal cables, or may be controlled by an electronic actuator. Parking brakes not only help hold your vehicle in place while parked, but are also designed to bypass the brake hydraulic system in case of brake failure to allow you to slow and stop your vehicle. Parking brakes may be built into the rear rotors of your vehicle, and use brake shoes to press against the inner rotor hat when the parking brake is engaged. On vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes, the existing brake shoes can be controlled using the parking brake to lock the vehicle in place. Replacing or repairing your parking brake system hardware may involve a variety of brake parts, including springs, retainers, and clips to replace any worn or damaged parts of the system. As these parts wear out, it may cause the parking brakes to remain engaged when released, or they may fail to activate as needed and no longer hold your vehicle securely in place. If you are having problems with your emergency brake, inspect the system to determine the source of the problem as soon as possible to keep you and your vehicle safe. If you need to replace the parking brake hardware, or if you are replacing the parking brake shoes, O'Reilly Auto Parts carries parking brake hardware kits to help simplify your emergency brake repairs and ensure a complete, lasting repair.
