What is a Vehicle Speed Sensor?

The vehicle speed sensor (VSS), also referred to as engine or transmission speed sensor, tracks how fast a vehicle is traveling. This data is collected and sent to your vehicle's computer, which may be used to feed the speedometer as well as a variety of other functions. A VSS is a small electronic device mounted to the transmission, differential, or other areas of your car. As the engine runs and the vehicle is driven, the vehicle speed sensor or sensors are continually transmitting signals to the vehicle's computer. These signals are used to track how fast your car is going in real time, while also contributing to your vehicle's odometer and trip odometer readings and making adjustments to transmission shifting and operation for optimal performance. If your speed sensor needs to be replaced, several vehicle systems may not function properly. You may notice poor shift timing, erratic speedometer readings, anti-lock brake system issues, or in some cases, an illuminated Check Engine light, when accelerating. If your Check Engine light is on, stop by your nearest O'Reilly Auto Parts store for free Check Engine light testing to determine if your VSS may need to be replaced.
