What is an ABS Control Module?

An ABS (anti-lock brake system) control module receives wheel speed and braking pressure information and uses it to prevent wheel lock-up or loss of traction when braking on slippery surfaces. When the ABS control module senses a loss of traction from one or more of the ABS speed sensors attached to the wheels, the control module releases and pulses braking pressure strategically at each wheel, allowing for a more controlled stop. This usually occurs during icy or slick road conditions, and allows your vehicle to stop in a shorter distance without sliding. ABS control modules are often a combination of electronic and hydraulic components, and are installed between the master cylinder and the rest of the braking system. If the ABS control module warning light comes on, the control module may have failed or a wheel speed sensor may have stopped working and needs to be replaced. Proper diagnosis may be necessary to determine which part of the ABS system requires attention, but a failing ABS module or sensor can cause longer braking distances and a lack of ABS. This can be dangerous, especially when driving in low-traction situations. Addressing ABS problems as soon as possible can help keep you driving safely, no matter the road conditions. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries a full line of ABS control modules, wheel speed sensors, and other ABS brake components for a complete brake repair.
