What are V-Belts?

V-belts are a type of engine accessory belt that are commonly used in older vehicles and heavy-duty applications. Automotive V-belts are typically made from rubber or synthetic materials and are reinforced with nylon for strength and durability. They come in a range of sizes and configurations to fit different types of pulleys, and differ from serpentine belts, as they are thicker and less flexible. This is why most older cars have one V-belt per accessory drive pulley, whereas a serpentine belt can run all of the engine's accessories with the same belt. V-belts also can be found in HVAC systems, industrial machinery, and agricultural equipment. V belts also often need to be manually tensioned, as automatic tensioners are not common V-belt drive systems. V-belts can become worn or damaged over time due to factors such as age, exposure to heat and humidity, and regular use. Signs of a worn or damaged V-belt can include squealing or chirping noises, reduced power output, and visible signs of wear or cracking. In some cases a squealing or noisy V-belt can simply be tensioned to restore its operation, but if it has extended beyond the range of the tensioner or is otherwise damaged, it should be replaced. If you need a replacement V-belt, O'Reilly Auto Parts carries new V-belts for select vehicles to help you complete your belt repair.
