What Are Wheel Hub Assemblies?

Wheel hub assemblies are an important part of your vehicle's steering, anti-lock braking system (ABS), and traction control system. Located between the drive axle or spindle and the brake rotors or drums, wheel hubs are responsible for securing your wheels to your vehicle and allowing them to rotate. Wheel hubs may also have splines that receive power from the driven axle to turn the wheels and move the vehicle. The wheel hub is mounted to the knuckle and is secured with bolts on pins, or may be pressed into a bearing and assembly. Complete hub assemblies contain bearings, seals, and may also feature wheel speed sensors that feed that traction and ABS control modules, speedometer, and other parts of the vehicle. Over time, wheel hubs and bearings can wear out or rust. If you notice your wheels making a whirring or grinding noise, you should check your wheel hubs and bearings for signs of play, looseness, or damage. You may also notice an ABS warning light on your dash or a shaking steering wheel while driving if your hubs or bearings are wearing out. Failing wheel bearings or hubs can also cause uneven tire wear or even allow the wheel to detach from the vehicle completely if not addressed. Driving with a damaged wheel hub or bearing reduces your vehicle's safety on the road, and should be addressed as soon as possible. To repair your wheel hub, you can use a wheel hub repair kit for a complete repair. At O'Reilly Auto Parts, we have wheel hub repair kits that include the hub, bearings, seals, and retaining rings that you'll need to fully replace your vehicle's hubs.
