What is Refrigerant Oil?

Refrigerant oil helps lubricate and seal the A/C compressor and other working components in the A/C system. As the A/C compressor runs, refrigerant and refrigerant oil are circulated throughout the system, and this can also minimize the risk of corrosion inside of metal A/C parts. If you have lost refrigerant recently from a leak or part replacement, you may also have low refrigerant oil levels in the system. When recharging the A/C system, it is important to always restore refrigerant oil levels to ensure continued performance and a lasting repair. Low refrigerant oil levels may result in component failures or inefficient cooling. A/C compressors that are low on oil may squeak or squeal, overheat, or lock up and stop working completely, leading to a much more costly repair. If you are replacing an A/C compressor or other A/C components, be sure to add the correct type and amount of refrigerant and refrigerant oil during your repair. There are several types of refrigerant oil, and the type of oil you use is dependent on the type of refrigerant used in your vehicle. Check your service manual to determine the best type of refrigerant oil for your repair, as PAG oil, Ester oil, and mineral-based refrigerant oils are compatible with specific types of refrigerant. Find the right A/C fluids for your vehicle by shopping at O'Reilly Auto Parts. We carry the right refrigerant, refrigerant oils, and other A/C parts for a complete air conditioning repair.
