Replacement A/C Condensers and Evaporators

Vehicle A/C systems rely on condensers and evaporators to cool the refrigerant and provide an outlet for cool air to be blown into the vehicle's cabin. The condenser is located on the front of the vehicle ahead of the radiator, and can be damaged in a collision or due to bugs and other contaminants clogging its fins and preventing airflow. Internal debris or damage can also cause significant issues for condensers and evaporators, which can cause the A/C in your vehicle to stop working or not blow as cold as it should. Shop O'Reilly Auto Parts for the right replacement condenser or evaporator to complete your A/C repair.

A/C Condensers

Condensers act like a radiator for the refrigerant in the A/C system that normally sits between the coolant radiator and the grille of the vehicle. The refrigerant enters the condenser as a gas, and it returns to a liquid state as it passes through the condenser and cools. Many vehicles use an electric cooling fan assembly, separate from the radiator cooling fan, that activates when the A/C is on to assist in cooling the refrigerant while the compressor is running. Condensers can become clogged by debris in the A/C system or develop leaks from damage, corrosion, or normal wear and tear over the life of the vehicle. Leaks from the A/C condenser will result in a loss of refrigerant, which can eventually cause the A/C to blow warmer air and be unable to cool the cabin of your vehicle properly.

A/C Evaporator Cores

Evaporators, also called evaporator cores, are similar to a radiator or condenser, but are designed to be more compact in order to fit under the dash of the vehicle. After the refrigerant is cooled in the condenser, it flows through an expansion device, then flows through the evaporator core in the dash of the vehicle to cool the cabin. The liquid refrigerant is near freezing when it enters the evaporator, and a blower motor and fan force air across the cold evaporator to move cold air into the vehicle's cabin. As the refrigerant temperature rises, it returns to a gas, and then moves back toward the A/C compressor to begin the cooling process again. Unlike heater cores that can leak coolant, evaporator cores or evaporator drains can become clogged. As condensation forms on the evaporator, water can drip under the vehicle or may overflow into the foot wells of the vehicle. Like condensers, corrosion or damage to the evaporator can lead to refrigerant leaks that can cause your A/C to stop blowing cold. If you need to replace your evaporator, or even if you simply need to clean the evaporator drain tube, you can find everything you need for your repair at O'Reilly Auto Parts.
