2016 Freightliner M2 106 - A/C Compressor Clutch
Symptoms of an A/C Clutch not Engaging
The A/C compressor clutch activates and deactivates the A/C compressor when you toggle the A/C switch from your cabin, which connects power to the clutch. When the compressor clutch is powered, it connects the compressor to power from the serpentine belt or a dedicated A/C compressor belt. A/C clutches are often made up of an outer idler pulley and an internal compressor clutch pulley which may contain an electromagnet to connect the two. Over time, the clutch may wear out or experience an electrical component failure that prevents it from activating when needed. This may cause clicking noises, or the A/C compressor may work intermittently or not at all. If you are experiencing a lack of cold air from your A/C system, check to make sure your compressor is running, the clutch is engaging, and the belt and clutch pulley are functioning correctly. It's also possible for the A/C clutch relay to fail and no longer send power to the clutch, preventing it from engaging and causing A/C system failure.
