What is an A/C Cut-Off Switch?

The air conditioning (A/C) cut-off switch, or A/C compressor clutch switch, is a component used to to control the operation of the A/C compressor's clutch. The compressor clutch engages and disengages the compressor from the engine's drive belt to cycle the A/C system and limit the risk of damage. When the pressure in the A/C system becomes too high, the cut-off switch will shut off the compressor by disengaging the clutch to prevent damage to the compressor and other A/C components. The switch is typically found near the A/C compressor, but may also be located elsewhere in the A/C system. If you notice increased noise from your A/C system or a decrease in A/C performance, then the cut-off switch may be failing, or the wiring pigtail may be damaged.
