The A/C receiver-drier is a metal canister-style filter that is responsible for removing moisture and contaminants from the refrigerant in thermal expansion valve A/C systems. A receiver-drier is generally located on the high-pressure side of the system, between the condenser and the expansion valve, and may be mounted or integral to the condenser. In an orifice tube-equipped A/C system, the receiver-drier is replaced with an accumulator that can be found on the low-pressure side of the system, between the evaporator and the compressor. Accumulators store and dry refrigerant, allowing it to expand into a vapor before it is returned to the compressor for cycling. The receiver-drier filter is manufactured with desiccant material that absorbs any moisture that might be present in the refrigerant. This helps prevent moisture from reacting with the refrigerant and contributing to corrosion and damage to components such as the compressor. The filter also traps any debris or contaminants that may be present in the system, which protects the A/C system from clogs and component damage. Over time, a receiver-drier's desiccant material can become saturated with moisture and contaminants, reducing its effectiveness. It's recommended that you replace the receiver-drier whenever the air conditioning system is opened for repair or maintenance to ensure the desiccant is not contaminated. Accumulators often do not need to be replaced when the A/C system is serviced, but the orifice tube should likely be replaced while the system is open to ensure proper operation. If you smell mold or hear rattling noises whenever you turn on your A/C, the receiver-drier or accumulator might be failing. Inspecting your A/C system for signs of leaks and using an A/C pressure gauge can help you diagnose where any clogs or issues may have occurred, so be certain that you perform a full diagnosis before opening the A/C system or replacing any components. O'Reilly Auto Parts offers receiver-driers, in-line A/C filters, accumulators, orifice tubes, and more to help you get your A/C fixed quickly.
