A/C Accumulator and Receiver-Drier Parts

Accumulators and receiver driers are very important components of the A/C system, and replacement of these components is often recommended any time the A/C system is repaired. Receiver driers and A/C accumulators are metal canisters which work as filters for the system and remove moisture to limit the risk of corrosion or refrigerant contamination. Any moisture in the A/C system can cause corrosion and degrade the compressor oil, which can lead to poor A/C performance and eventual compressor failure. Replacement A/C Accumulators

Accumulators are used in A/C systems equipped with orifice tubes. The accumulator on your vehicle is mounted on the low-pressure side of the A/C system and is designed to store the liquid refrigerant that exits the evaporator and prevent it from entering the compressor and causing damage. The accumulator allows the liquid refrigerant to warm and change back into a vapor before it is drawn back into the compressor, keeping your A/C system working as it should and limiting the risk of compressor failure or damage. Accumulators often only fail due to corrosion from moisture or clogging due to debris that has entered the A/C system, but because moisture is likely to enter the A/C system when opened, the accumulator should typically be replaced any time you perform a major A/C component repair or replacement.

New A/C Receiver-Driers

Receiver-driers are used on A/C systems equipped with expansion valves and are normally smaller than accumulators. Receiver-driers store oil and refrigerant until they are needed in the A/C system. Receiver driers also "dry" the oil and refrigerant by using desiccant to remove excess moisture from the system, and they typically also include a filter to prevent debris from circulating through the A/C system. Like accumulators, receiver driers experience damage from moisture and clogging, and they can be damaged due to A/C leaks that draw moisture into the system. It is recommended that you replace the receiver-drier any time a major A/C component is replaced or when the system is opened to ensure that debris and moisture do not contaminate or damage the system once the repair has been completed.
