Car batteries help start your Accord and power various electrical components like the radio, power windows, seats, and door locks while the engine is off. All car batteries will need to be replaced over time, as they can degrade and fail due to age, use, climate, and driving habits. Signs that your car battery is bad include a clicking sound when you turn the key in the ignition, corroded battery terminals, malfunctioning or inoperative electrical accessories, or if your vehicle cranks slowly or won’t attempt to start at all.

In three images, our expert opens the hood of the Honda Accord, and disconnects the battery using a deep socket.

Step 1: Prepare Your Accord

Park on a level surface, and open the hood. Use your 10mm deep socket or wrench to loosen the negative battery cable, which is attached to the terminal toward the outside of the vehicle. Once it’s loose enough, lift it off and move it aside. Repeat this step for the positive battery terminal.
In two images, the battery hold-down is loosened and the old battery is removed.

Step 2: Remove Your Old Battery

Use the same socket or wrench to loosen the nuts on the battery hold-down. Remove the hold-down by slipping the hooks out of their holes on both sides of the battery tray. Now you should be able to lift the battery out.
Our expert installs a new battery into the Accord’s battery tray.

Step 3: Install Your New Battery

Set your new battery in the battery tray in the same orientation as the old one.

Step 4: Reinstall Your Battery Hold-Down

To reinstall the hold-down, set it in place on the battery. Make sure the hooks at the bottom of the J-shaped rods slip into the holes on the battery tray and tighten the nuts.
In two images, the battery cables are reconnected and our expert closes the Accord’s hood.

Step 5: Reattach Your Battery Cables

Inspect your battery cables for any signs of corrosion. If you notice rust, discoloration, or flakiness, be sure to clean the battery cables. In some instances of advanced corrosion, you may need to replace them. Use your socket or wrench to reattach the positive battery cable first. Then, reattach your negative battery cable. Use battery terminal protectors to prevent corrosion and extend battery life. Once both battery cables have been reattached, close the hood.

Do It Right: Because your battery cables were detached, it’s likely your factory stereo settings and clock will need to be reset.
