Why Are Upper and Lower Control Arms Important?


Upper and lower control arms provide both a connection and pivot point between your vehicle’s suspension and chassis, and often include ball joints and bushings. They allow the suspension to articulate over changing road conditions. Control arms work in tandem to keep your wheels on course, engaged with the road surface, and allow the vehicle’s alignment to be adjusted and set as needed.

Control arms typically link the steering or suspension knuckle and hub to the frame, and must resist a multitude of loads and external forces, including accelerating, braking and cornering, while also carrying the suspended weight of the vehicle body. Control arms also maintain dynamic wheel alignment, which lowers operating noise, road shock and vibration while increasing resistance to unwanted suspension movement.

Depending on your vehicle’s suspension configuration (MacPherson, multi-link, or double wishbone), control arms can be found on the front and/or rear suspension, and your vehicle may have lower control arms or upper and lower control arms.
