How to Replace the Starter on a 2014 Ford F-150

We will be replacing a starter on a 2014 Ford F-150. Remember, the procedure can differ depending on your vehicle, so always consult your manual first.

Prepare Your Vehicle

Step 1: Prepare Your Vehicle

Park on a level surface and pop the hood.



Do It Right: Refer to your vehicle’s service manual for proper procedure on disconnecting the negative battery terminal to avoid losing digital presets.

Step 2: Disconnect Your Battery

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Secure it away from metal.

Step 3: Lift Your Vehicle

Lift and support the front end, chock the rear wheels.

Remove Your Old Starter

Step 4: Remove the Solenoid Terminal Cover and Bolts

Locate the starter and remove the solenoid terminal cover. Loosen and remove the two terminal nuts and the terminals.



Do It Right: Note where these terminals go on the starter to help simplify the new starter installation. On this vehicle, you’ll also remove the transmission cooling line bracket nut and move the cooling lines to the side.

Step 5: Remove Your Old Starter

Remove the lower starter mounting stud bolt and move the ground cable aside. Remove the upper mounting stud bolt and lower the starter.

Install Your New Starter

Step 6: Install Your New Starter

Lift your new starter into position and finger-tighten the upper mounting bolt. Install the lower mounting bolt through the ground cable eyelet then thread it into the starter by hand. Once the bolts are snug, torque both to manufacturer specifications.

Step 7: Reinstall Your Starter Cables

Reposition the transmission cooling lines and secure them with the bracket nut. Reinstall the starter cables and secure them with the terminal nuts. Replace the starter solenoid terminal cover.

Step 8: Reconnect Your Battery

Lower the front end, remove the wheel chocks, and reconnect the negative battery cable. Close the hood and start the vehicle.
