How to Choose the Best Windshield Wiper Blades

Windshield wiper blades keep your vision clear and your drive safe by removing rain, snow, ice, and debris from your windshield. When driving in harsh weather conditions, it is vital to your safety, and the safety of other drivers on the road, to have wiper blades that work efficiently. When it’s time to replace your wiper blades, knowing the best type for your vehicle and the way you drive is important. At O’Reilly Auto Parts, we carry a variety of beam, conventional, hybrid, and rear wiper blades in many different sizes to best match your vehicle's needs. Performing regular windshield wiper maintenance and replacing the wiper blades when needed are two helpful ways to keep your windshield clean and your driving visibility clear. Our team of Professional Parts People® are available to help you determine the right size and type of wiper blades to best fit your vehicle, and can even install your new wiper blades for free. Read on to learn more about choosing the right wiper blades for your vehicle.

What Size of Windshield Wipers Do I Need?

If your vehicle’s original wiper blades were conventional blades, it can be cost-effective to replace the blades with the same design, though upgrading to a beam blade will likely provide enhanced wiper performance. However, if your vehicle’s original wiper blades were beam blades, it is not recommended that you use conventional blades, and only beam blades should be installed to maintain adequate visibility. If you need to replace your windshield wiper blades, but are unsure what length you need, you can measure your existing blade length to find the correct size for your windshield. If you own a car service manual or owners manual for your vehicle, you can also find the correct wiper blade length and fit listed there, along with a step-by-step guide to change your wiper blades yourself. If you’re still unsure which wiper blades your vehicle needs, or if you don’t have an owners manual or other resources to find this information, our Professional Parts People can help you find the right size and style to match your vehicle.

Understanding the Different Types of Windshield Wiper Blades

Beam wiper blade on a windshield

Beam Wiper Blades

Beam windshield wiper blades are very common on newer vehicles, and are designed to be pressed completely flush against the windshield. The rubber blade is not attached to a metal frame, but is formed over the top of an arched, flexible metal spring that allows it to form-fit to the curve of the windshield. The rubber on beam-style wipers does not experience the pressure points of conventional wipers, which leads to more even pressure across the entire surface of the windshield and a more complete wipe. Beam wiper blades are also more aerodynamic, reducing wind noise and drag when driving.

  • Beam blades often feature higher-quality rubber for increased durability
  • Beam blade design provides more consistent wiping performance
  • Withstands extreme weather conditions better than conventional blades
  • Special spoiler keeps the blade flush to the windshield during strong winds or while driving at high speeds

Conventional Wiper Blades

Standard or conventional wiper blades are the most traditional blade style. This wiper blade design consists of a metal or plastic frame with the rubber wiper blade attached, creating anywhere from four to eight pressure points on the windshield. The central wiper arm arched on top of the blade maintains tension using springs, keeping the blade pressed against the windshield as the wiper blade moves across the windshield to efficiently clean and remove moisture and debris from the glass surface. Conventional wiper blades were often installed on most older vehicles from the factory, and are a great cost-effective replacement option for older vehicles. That said, upgrading to a beam or hybrid blade might provide a significant improvement to visibility and wiper performance.

  • Uses brackets to keep the blade in contact with the windshield
  • Considered entry-level for most vehicles
  • Budget-friendly and available for almost any application

Hybrid and Winter Wiper Blades

Hybrid-style windshield wipers are a combination of conventional and beam wiper blades. Hybrid blades are aerodynamic and can reduce lift in extreme winds, work well in all weather conditions, and minimize the effects of the conventional blade pressure points for full-coverage wiping. Winter-specific blades are protected with specialized blade insulation, making them tougher than other blades and able to withstand even the largest amounts of snow and ice buildup. These durable blades are designed to keep your windshield clean in the harshest winter weather conditions and the lowest winter temperatures.

  • Designed to be sturdier and more robust for longer life in extreme conditions
  • Specifically designed to withstand winter temperatures and precipitation

How Long Do Windshield Wiper Blades Last?

Wiper blades are a regular maintenance item, and they will wear out over time with exposure to the elements. Many different factors can cause your wiper blades to wear down. The rubber on the blade can crack or split due to intense hot, cold, or dry climates, damage from large ice chunks or debris, and overuse. As the rubber edge begins to break down, you will begin to notice streaky or missed spots, poor coverage, or squeaking when using your windshield wipers. This occurs as the rubber's elasticity begins to fail, resulting in loose or poor contact between the wiper blade and the windshield. If this happens, you can either replace the pair of wiper blades, or if necessary or possible, install wiper blade refills.

In most instances, the rubber wiper blade element is the only piece of the wiper assembly that prevents your wipers from cleaning your windshield properly. In this case, replacing the windshield wipers may be all that is needed to restore performance. Damaged wiper arms may also fail to provide adequate tension to keep the blade in contact with the windshield. It is recommended that you change your wiper blades every six months, typically before spring and winter, to ensure the best performance in poor weather, or replace the blades at the scheduled time or interval listed in your vehicle’s service manual. Regular, scheduled wiper blade inspection is a great way to stay prepared by making sure your windshield wiper blades are in usable shape.
