Battery Rating

Reserve Capacity (RC) is the number of minutes a fully-charged battery at 80°F will continue to supply at least 25 amps and maintain a charge above 10.5 volts. The higher the Reserve Capacity, the greater the amount of power stored by the battery.

Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) is the rating that identifies your battery's ability to start the engine in cold temperatures. The rating refers to the number of amps a 12-volt battery can deliver at 0°F for 30 seconds while maintaining a voltage of at least 7.2 volts. The higher the CCA rating, the greater the cold-weather starting power.

Amp Hours (Ah) measures battery capacity by multiplying the amperage by the hours of discharge. This measurement is specific to the amount of electrical energy stored in a fully-charged battery at a stable temperature of 77°F, and the current draw that a battery can maintain during a discharge at a fixed rate before the voltage falls to 1.75V per cell. This represents the time that a battery will continue to operate essential accessories if the alternator or generator fails. For example, a battery with a 120Ah rating can provide 1 amp for 120 hours, 2 amps for 60 hours, 3 amps for 40 hours, 5 amps for 24 hours, 6 amps for 20 hours, etc. The higher the Amp Hours, the greater the staying power.

Cores & Recycling

When you install a new battery in your vehicle, the old battery you’ve replaced is called a core. Battery manufacturers recycle these cores, which makes it possible for new lead-acid batteries to consist of up to 80% recycled materials, and 99% of the material used in those new batteries is recyclable. When batteries are recycled properly, the process is regulated by local, state, and federal laws, is good for the environment, and reduces the cost of batteries.

Annually:
  • About 200 million pounds of lead are recycled
  • Over 12 million pounds of plastic are recycled
  • Over 6 million gallons of acid are recycled

Bring any old lead-acid batteries you have sitting around to a nearby O’Reilly Auto Parts store for recycling — whether you bought the battery from us or not — and in many cases, we’ll give you a $10 gift card for each one*. This service isn’t available in all areas. Some restrictions on battery types and quantities that can be recycled per day in your area may apply, so check with your local store for details.

*O’Reilly team members reserve the right to refuse a damaged battery for recycling as they see fit. If your battery has been physically damaged and is leaking acid, it should be recycled at your local hazardous waste recycling facility. Motorcycle, ATV/UTV, golf cart, marine, and lawn and garden AGM or lead-acid batteries do not qualify for the $10 gift card offer. We also cannot recycle lithium batteries for marine, powersport, or automotive applications.
