How to Change a Cabin Air Filter

The cabin air filter in your vehicle is designed to trap debris and contaminants from the air outside of the vehicle before airflow enters the cabin. This filtration process ensures that the air brought into your vehicle’s cabin is almost completely free of allergens, pollutants, and debris, which not only makes the air you breathe while driving, but can also keep your interior cleaner. Dirty cabin filters restrict clean air flow through the vehicle's ventilation system, impacting performance of your vehicle’s A/C system. Clogged cabin air filter symptoms can include:

  • Reduced or limited airflow through the vents
  • Odors during heat or A/C system operation
  • Difficulty clearing fog from the windshield
  • Lack of A/C system performance

It’s important to change your cabin air filter according to the recommended filter replacement intervals in your owners manual to keep the vehicle’s heating and cooling system operating as well as possible. While many drivers choose to change their cabin air filters once a year, it’s important to follow the recommended replacement intervals, especially if you drive in dusty or polluted environments. When it’s time to change your cabin air filter, stop by O’Reilly Auto Parts to find the right replacement filter for your vehicle.

When to Change Cabin Air Filters

If you're not sure how often to change your vehicle’s cabin air filter, we recommend reviewing the manufacturer's specifications and recommendations for your vehicle. Many drivers choose to replace their filter once a year, or when they notice poor performance or limited airflow, but cabin air filters can be replaced as often as needed for maximum performance. Cabin air filters are vehicle-specific, meaning the products, installation, and location of the filter will depend on the vehicle you're driving. For replacement intervals specific to your vehicle, check your owners manual.

Step-By-Step Instructions to Change Cabin Air Filters

These instructions and video will demonstrate a cabin air filter replacement on a 2005 Toyota Matrix. Before starting this replacement, take a look at your vehicle’s owners manual or a service manual to ensure that you are aware of the correct procedure. Generally speaking, once you've located the air filter, it's simple to switch it out with a new filter. However, if you don’t feel completely comfortable doing this yourself, we can also refer you to a professional technician.

Remove glove box pin

Step 1: Remove Glove Box Pin

Open your glove box and empty it out completely. Locate a pin on the outside edge of the glove box. Use your screwdriver to take the screw out. Then slip the pin out of the hole on this arm. Put the screw someplace safe. You won't want to lose it.Some vehicles will have a band holding the glove box in place that you’ll need to release.
Lower glove box

Step 2: Lower Glove Box

Now, gently press in on both sides of your glove box, and it will lower. This will expose what’s behind it, including a black cover, which is where your cabin air filter is. Most vehicles with a filter behind the glove box will be accessed like this. Just be careful not to force the glove box down—there will be a limited amount of slack in the hinges.

Do It Right: Be careful not to force the glove box down when you are lowering it. There will be a limited amount of slack in the hinges for you to work with. When you feel the glove box start to resist, do not apply additional pressure.

Remove old filter

Step 3: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter

There are tabs on either side of this cover that are released by squeezing them inward. Once the cover is removed, pull the old filter out slowly—it’s likely to be full of dust and dirt. Make a note of the direction of the airflow as indicated by the printed arrow on the side of the old cabin filter.

Clean the filter housing

Step 4: Clean the Cabin Air Filter Housing

You'll want the filter housing to be clean before you install your new cabin filter. Check the cabin air filter housing for excessive dirt or debris, and clean it out if necessary. Use a damp rag or microfiber towel to carefully wipe out the inside of the filter housing, or use a vacuum to clean it out if necessary.
Slide new filter in

Step 5: Install the New Cabin Air Filter

When you’re ready to put the new filter in, check the airflow arrow on the edge of the filter to make sure you’re installing it in the same orientation as the one you removed. Once the filter is seated securely, replace the cabin air filter housing cover and snap the tabs back into place.
Put glove box back

Step 6: Lift the Glove Box Back Into Place

After your new cabin air filter is installed, lift your glove box back to its original position, and secure it by sliding the pin back into the hole in the arm, or putting the band or bracket back in place. Then, replace any screws or retainers, replace any items you removed before starting, and close the glove box.
